Many people feel that going green is just out of reach. That it will be too time consuming and so they never step up. Here in Muncie, there are many organizations and companies that make it easier than ever to Live Green.
You know those pesky plastic bags that you throw away after going grocery shopping? They take hundreds of years to photodegrade in landfills.
If you collect those bags in your garage or pantry until the next time you go shopping, Kroger, Wal-mart and Meijer have places to drop them off where they can be reused and disposed of safely.
Plastic bottles, Cardboard containers, newspaper, glass-most people know these things can be recycled, but they don't stop to think about how many items that really is. Flattened Empty Kleenex boxes, old homework, emtpty pill bottles, hairspray cans, fast food bags and cups, and so much more can all be recyled. Did you know that the company that collects trash in Muncie is the same one that collects the Recyclables?
Its simple. Its color coded. All regular trash goes in whatever trash bag you would normally use, but all the recyclables mentioned above are placed in Blue Bags. Then when trash day comes both the regular garbage bags and the Blue Bags are put in your trash can on the curb and the trash pick up crew takes care of the rest.
Do you use insulin, EpiPens, or any other form or lancelet or needle? There are safe and proper ways to dispose of these.
By using an empty plastic container, such as an old detergent bottles, and storing used needles in there, you insure that no one will get pricked. When you need to get rid of the container you can simply drop it off at the Muncie Sanitation Department located at 811 East Centennial Ave.
Another danger that people rarely think about recycling, expired and unused medications. They can be poisonous in the environment and dangerous if found by accident in the trash. What to do?
There are two programs that are active in Delaware county that help citizens with this problem. The first is called Muncie TRIAD, they collect all medications and have specific collection dates. For dates and locations call (765)289-4541. The second is a drop off at Muncie Sanitation, 702 E. Centennial Ave., they collect noncontrolled medicines and are easily accessible during business hours Monday through Friday and 8:00-12:00pm on Saturdays.
Old cellphones, cameras, and other electronic waste also needs to be disposed of carefully.
However, there are locations all over Delaware county that are able to dispose of these devices safely and it can be as easy as going to the post office. Recycle electronic waste.
